Gender Inequality and Education

Our strategy for advancing inclusive, high-quality education encompasses every facet of the educational landscape. This includes not only formal classroom settings but also informal learning environments, extracurricular activities, policy frameworks, teaching methodologies, curriculum development, assessment practices, teacher training programs, parental involvement, community partnerships, and beyond.

By addressing all aspects of education comprehensively, we aim to address power imbalances, re-evaluate conventional gender norms and divisions, and promote comprehension of the root causes of inequality and mechanisms of marginalization

The Big Smile Foundation ensures girls access to quality, safe, and continued education, as school is a space in which girls exercise their agency, make their voices heard, and access their first leadership opportunities. Being out of school doesn’t just have devastating consequences for girls’ life opportunities; it places them at risk of teen pregnancy, child marriage, female genital mutilation, and other forms of gender-based violence.

Education is critical to tackling harmful gender norms and empowering girls to drive change. It gives girls the skills to become leaders, innovators, and changemakers and to tackle future crises. Through this program, The Big Smile Foundation continues to work with the community, families, schools, and girls to make sure girls continue to learn, grow, and become empowered individuals.

This is achieved through:

  • Empower girls, parents, and the community on the importance of girl-child education.
  • Provision of scholastic materials for girls.
  • Engage out-of-school children in Catch-up Programs to ease their mainstreaming into formal classroomsProviding mentorship and follow-ups for girls Ensuring girls complete mandatory secondary school.

Education is critical in tackling harmful gender norms, and empowering girls to drive change. It gives girls the skills to become leaders, innovators, and changemakers and to tackle future crises.
